The terrifying Hinx pursues Bond in a car chase. Bond travels to Rome and infiltrates a secret meeting, but their leader Franz Oberhauser, reveals Bond’s presence. Back in London, Bond is grounded by M but confides in Moneypenny that he was acting on orders from the previous M before she died.

While it didn’t mitigate most of the franchise’s issues, replacing SMERSH with SPECTRE afforded the James Bond series with a degree of timelessness and an iconic villainous archetype.On a rogue mission in Mexico City Bond kills an assassin. The early Bond books and movies have numerous examples of sexist, racist, and misogynistic behaviours and depictions, and having Bond’s main nemeses be part of a now bygone era would only further date the franchise. The result was a politically safe and nebulous group of antagonists that soon inspired numerous similar villainous organizations in the action film genre.

As a fictitious third party in the Cold War, Fleming and the filmmakers were free to make SPECTRE as outlandish as they wished, though the organization was inspired by real-life crime organizations, such as the Yakuza, Triad, and Mafia. Replacing SMERSH with SPECTRE also freed Fleming from the constraints of reality in his further Bond films and novels.
